Moroccan-Belgian Named Leader of Paris Attack

French officials say the man who is suspected of organizing Friday’s terrorist attack in Paris is Belgian citizen Abdelhamid Abaaoud.

Police say Abaaoud is 27 years old. He is said to be part of a Brussels-based terrorist cell. He avoided capture in Europe and is believed to be in Syria.

Belgian media says Abaaoud is of Moroccan descent. He has been wanted since January following a gun battle with police in eastern Belgium.

Abaaoud is suspected of organizing the attacks Friday that left at least 129 people dead and more than 300 wounded in Paris.  He has also been linked to failed attacks on a Paris-bound train in August and a church in April.

Abaaoud played a part in recruiting others to join the Islamic State group. He even recruited his own 13-year-old brother, according to French media.

The Guardian reports Abaaoud spent time fighting with the Islamic State, also called ISIS, in Syria. His link to the terrorist group came after he was identified in an ISIS video.

French police continued to raid possible terrorist safe houses Monday. More than 150 raids have taken place. The raids took place in Toulouse, Grenoble, Jeumont, Lyon and the Paris suburbs. Ten people were detained. Weapons also were taken in the raids, including a rocket launcher, guns and bulletproof vests.

French investigators identified one suicide bomber of Friday’s attacks as Samy Amkimour. Amkimour was a 28-year-old Frenchman charged in a terrorism investigation in 2012.

WORD OF THE WEEK

fly off the handle

Meaning:

If you fly off the handle, you are so angry about something that you lose control of yourself and start screaming and shouting.

Origin:

Possibly related to the dangerous and unpredictable way an axe-head can fly off its handle if it comes loose.

Examples:

My wife flew off the handle when I said she spent way too much money on ridiculously expensive designer clothes, ankle-breaking shoes and silly little handbags too small to carry anything in.

Our boss flew off the handle when he saw the mistake. He said he’d fire us this time, but he didn’t really mean it … I hope.

Quick Quiz:

We were having dinner in a restaurant last night when this guy at the next table flew off the handle because

  1. the food was so delicious
  2. the waiter was so handsome
  3. the waiter brought the wrong thing

MUSIC

When We Were Young – Adele

Video: https://youtu.be/DDWKuo3gXMQ

Everybody loves the things you do

From the way you talk

To the way you move

Everybody here is watching you

Cause you feel like home

You’re like a dream come true

But if by chance you’re here alone

Can I have a moment

Before I go?

Cause I’ve been by myself all night long

Hoping you’re someone I used to know

You look like a movie

You sound like a song

My god, this reminds me

Of when we were young

Let me photograph you in this light

In case it is the last time

That we might be exactly like we were

Before we realized

We were sad of getting old

It made us restless

It was just like a movie

It was just like a song

I was so scared to face my fears

Cause nobody told me that you’d be here

And I swore you moved overseas

That’s what you said, when you left me

You still look like a movie

You still sound like a song

My god, this reminds me

Of when we were young

Let me photograph you in this light

In case it is the last time

That we might be exactly like we were

Before we realized

We were sad of getting old

It made us restless

It was just like a movie

It was just like a song

When we were young

When we were young

When we were young

When we were young

It’s hard to win me back

Everything just takes me back

To when you were there

To when you were there

And a part of me keeps holding on

Just in case it hasn’t gone

I guess I still care

Do you still care?

It was just like a movie

It was just like a song

My god, this reminds me

Of when we were young

When we were young

When we were young

When we were young

When we were young

Let me photograph you in this light

In case it is the last time

That we might be exactly like we were

Before we realized

We were sad of getting old

It made us restless

I’m so mad I’m getting old

It makes me reckless

It was just like a movie

It was just like a song

When we were young
